Modalities Offered
The following are some examples of modalities we frequently use in addition to traditional therapy practices. This list is not comprehensive and we may incorporate different modalities that are appropriate for your child.
Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)

"Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a therapeutic technique used in physical and occupational therapy to treat children with motor delay by improving automatic postural responses and promoting progress towards developmental milestones. The goal of DMI is to provoke a specified active motor response from the child in response to defined dynamic exercises prescribed by the therapist. DMI stimulates neuroplasticity to facilitate new neuronal connections and development of motor milestones." - statement from the DMI website https://dmitherapy.com/
DMI may be used in combination with other modalities based on your child's specific needs as determined by the therapist.
Electrical Stimulation
Electrical stimulation is a safe, research-supported technique used to help strengthen muscles that may be weak or relax muscles that are spastic to allow for more efficient movement patterns. Electrical impulses are delivered through adhesive pads placed on the skin to activate targeted muscles and improve nerve-to-muscle communication. This therapy is typicaly combined with active exercises to maximize benefit.
We are trained in the NISE-stim protocol, TASES, and general electrical stimulation practices to tailor a program specific to your child.

Pain Management & Manual Work

The number one complaint in adults with CP is pain (Jonnson et al). We believe in treating the whole child, and that includes managing pain, contracture, and mobility limitations.
Just like consistent exercise for adults, intensive therapy can be accompanied by muscle soreness and fatigue. Through a combination of manual therapy, soft tissue work, and active movement through the available range of motion, our goal is to get your child feeling more comfortable each day so they can perform at their highest ability during therapies.
